History of Our Group
by Betty Maxwell
The Denver Meditation Service Group dates back to the 1970s, when Marie Mason gathered together a small group of Alice Bailey readers to perform Full Moon Festival services. Some early members, in addition to Marie, were Elsie Brown, Paul Batiste Gladys Peters, and Alice Jordan. Meetings were held at the First Unitarian Church of Denver to begin with, chosen for its central location in the Capital Hill area of Denver.
After the passing of Marie Mason, Elsie Brown became the leader of the group. She maintained the group’s small library in her home and also led study groups in her home. Ann Cahoy, a newcomer member, taught a ground-breaking series of courses on esoteric astrology, courses that she was later able to make available on a wider basis. Various study groups have taken place over the years, with a current group focusing monthly on A Treatise on White Magic by Alice Bailey.
After leading the group for many years, Elsie passed the leadership to Betty Maxwell and Judy Walden-Bell. When Judy moved, Betty continued as co-leader along with Janet Jacobs and with Linda Rinelli as the creator of this website.
Over the years, our group has been fortunate to receive visits from leaders of Lucis Trust. Mary Bailey, head of Lucis Trust following the passing of Alice Bailey, regularly visited our group during her world tours. Sarah McKechnie, successor to Mary Bailey, continued this tradition of giving public lectures at major US cities of which Denver was included.
The Denver Meditation Service Group holds meditations at the full moon, which are rituals that follow the format of rituals held by Lucis Trust, headquartered in New York, Geneva, and London. Their purpose is to provide group reception of those high solar spiritual energies available to us at the time of each full moon and to facilitate their distribution. Ritual moves the group out of daily busy-ness onto the higher mental plane through a talk or reading and then proceeds through visualization and group mantras into meditation. It ends quietly with shared flowers and peace. This ritual has taken place monthly for over 30 years now and continues to be available for all who would like to participate in this service work.
